AMNW Design Challenge: Push The Boundaries - Judging
The final AMNW Design Challenge aired this morning. The designers, Gerry Barnard, Lindsay Chapel, Natalya Hebert, and Amy Sim were asked to “Push the Boundaries”.
The challenge was to create an avant-garde look using Robert Kaufman Fabrics and a commercial pattern of their choice, or one of their own design.
The judges were Pati Palmer, owner of Palmer/Pletsch Publishing, Eden Dawn, Fashion Editor of Portland Monthly Magazine, and Jonny Schultz, Fashion Director of Q6 Model and Artist Management. The guest judge was Evie Ashworth, the Design Director for the Retail Division of Robert Kaufman Fabrics. For this challenge, the designers will receive double the point value. It has been a close contest and anyone could win.
Lindsay created a garment that made a personal statement. “A little bit spiky, intimidating and scary, but still fun and sparkly.” Her little black dress was adorned with spike shaped epaulets, and on the bodice, a glittered insert, and hot-fix rhinestones. Nail-head trim and three strands of a fine black chain completed her creation.
Gerry’s concept was “Destination Wedding on the Moon”. A long white dress with hip detail was covered by a silver cape made with Texture Magic, which gave it a puckered look.
Natalya put a semi-sheer, long, flowing black skirt over a red mini-dress with a plunging neckline and winged feathery epaulets.
Amy used Mardi gras as her inspiration. She created a hooded kimono cape, with a feather boa from hood to waistline closure. The cape was over a bandeau top, and hot pants with a sequined lace overlay panel. Amy accessorized her look with fingerless gloves fashioned out of sequined lace, an embellished mask, and a choker with faux gems.
On Monday February 27th, the judges will reveal the winner of the AMNW Design Challenge. The top prize is valued at $4500, which includes a sewing vacation with Pati Palmer. Over the five weeks, the judges have been impressed by the designer’s creativity and ability to meet the weekly challenges.
Be sure to go to AMNW and vote for your favorite designer.
The winner of the popular vote will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Fabric Depot, and a $100 gift certificate to Montavilla Sewing Centers.
