Meet Mary Fons

Mary FonsMary Fons describes herself as "a writer who grew up under a quilt," but she is a quilter in her own right, as well. The daughter of Fons & Porter founder Marianne Fons, Mary has spent her life surrounded by the quilting industry. She co-hosts the Fons & Porter Love of Quilting show with her mom. She was the editor for Quilty magazine and compiled the Dear Quilty book released earlier this year. Last year she put out the wonderful Make + Love Quilts book, full of scrappy quilt patterns for new and experienced quilters.

And this month she is coming to Fabric Depot for three events:

Mary Fons Presents: A Thirty-Something Quilter Tells All
A personal lecture, where Mary shares the history of Fons & Porter, her own quilting journey, and how to ensure the next generation of American quiltmakers are taken care of. Tips, insights, and thought-provoking questions for every quilter at every level. Laughs -- and a few tears -- promised.

Sew with Mary Fons: Her Chubby Churn Dash Block
The "chubby" Churn Dash has the perfect ratio of triangles and squares. In this class, you'll use the Fons & Porter Half-and-Quarter ruler to get half-square triangles from strips, solving any straight-of-grain vs. bias problems. A great beginner class, but enjoyable for all levels.

Mary Fons Presents: No Better Time to Quilt
Is quilting in America in trouble? Are quilts that were made 100 years ago "better" or somehow more authentic than the quilts we make today? No and no. In this informative and entertaining lecture, Mary takes you through tools quilters had "back when" and the way, way better ones we have now; she touches on how we got here from that very first quilt made in our country, and she gives plenty of tips and inspiration along the way.
